Wheat penny #24

I found another wheat penny at work yesterday - my 24th  1945, and the usual clad plus 2 more junk rings which brings my total to 22. My total for the last couple of days is 3-q, 14d, 5n and 4 pennies -$2.44. I'm getting closer to silver I hope finding 1965 dimes and 1964 nickels.

Washington Silver Quarter

This type will probably be the first silver quarter you will find when you start detecting.

History:
This type was intended to be a commemorative issue marking the 200th anniversary of Washington's birth. John Flannagan, a New York sculptor, was the designer. The initials JF are found at the base of the neck. Mint mark is on the reverse below the wreath. Minted from 1932 to 1964. The most valuable being a 1932d. Found my first one this year and it was my first silver quarter.

Liberty Head or V Nickel

History: In 1883 the type was changed to the familiar Liberty head. This type appeared without the word CENTS on the coin, merely a large letter V. These centless coins were coldplated and passed for five dollars. Later in that year the word CENTS was added.
 The designer was Charles E. Barber. V nickels were made from 1883 to 1913. The most valuable is a 1885 in EF40. V nickels weigh 5 grams and have a composition of an alloy of 75% copper and 25% nickel. Still looking for my first.

Lunch hunts

Still been going out at lunch time. Haven't been finding anything old - just the nickels -1964.  At least I'm still finding coins - another buck 72 the last 2 days - 4-q, 5-d, 3-n and 7 pennies.

Sunday's beach and afternoon hunts

Went to the beach Sunday morning - didn't find much another ring junk #19, a key and clad. I decided to hunt at my son's old school in the afternoon where I found the mercury dime -  I managed some clad and junk ring #20. Need to find a gold ring - maybe one day.

Roosevelt Dime

The Roosevelt dime is familiar to everyone. It will probably be one of the first silver coins that you will find when you start metal detecting. It was made of .900 silver until 1964.

History: John R. Sinnock (whose initials JS are at the truncation of the neck) designed this dime showing a portrait of Franklin D. Roosevelt. The design has heavier lettering and a more modernistic character than preceding types. Minted 1946 to date.
The most valuable being a 1949s.

Struck silver again

Well I went back to my niece's house where I found my first silver quarter and tried it again. No such luck - not even a clad coin - just an old dog tag. So I went to a school where I've had luck with wheat pennies and one silver dime. Struck silver again - another merc dime 1923 - my oldest dime to date and 2 days in a row. Boy I hope this keeps up.
