It's going to hard to top this years findings with all the silver coins and wheat pennies. I would like to find $300, 10 silver coins and 50 wheat pennies. A gold ring or jewelry would be great and a few more coins in the 1800's range.
My total findings from this year and last is - 824 q, 883 d, 330 n, and 1433 pennies for a grand total of $369.59. 82 wheat pennies and 42 rings.

LAST HUNT OF YEAR - 13 COINS FOR 3000+
Went back to the school down the road with the nice weather. It wasn't bad hunting - about 2-3" of snow on the ground - had to move it with my foot when I needed to dig but not a problem. I managed to find 13 coins to bring my years total to 3010. My take was 76 cents - 1-q, 3-d, 3-n and 6 pennies and a cross. I fell short of my goal of $300 but there is always next year. Overall I had a great year finding 15 silver coins, over 70 wheat pennies and some old nickels. I will have to set my goals for next year.

Flying Eagle cent
History - The coin was designed by James Longacre and was minted from 1856 to 1858. The 1856 Eagle cent was not an authorized mint issue. In 1858, there was a "large letter" and "small letter" variety produced. An easy way to tell the difference between large-letter and small-letter varieties is to look at the word 'America. The A and M in the word AMERICA are joined in the large letter variety and separated in the small letter variety. The most valuable being the 1856 in EF40. I would love to find one of these - thought I did but it turned out to be a canandian penny with a seagull on the back.

MAYBE????
The weather is supposed to warm up by the weekend . I hope I have a chance on Friday to get out and hunt for my 3 coins to get 3000 for the year. Saturday it's going to be close to 50 so maybe I can start the new year off right. Time will tell.

7 DAYS LEFT
The weather is still not cooperating and it seems that my hunting days are done. I have sent my delta unit in for repair and will have to wait until next year to try it out. Barring a miracle I will clean up the IDX and put it away - still all in all I had a very good year. I've been doing some research and have been talking to people to find new areas to hunt. At least I have some time off of work.

NOT LOOKING GOOD
10 days left in the year and it doesn't look like I'll be able to get one more hunt in. The snow is still too deep to give it a shot and the forecast looks bleak. I get a lot of days off shortly but no where to go. It's Christmas time - a time for miracles - maybe.

Va boy finds apparent Civil War sword
A week after receiving a metal detector for his seventh birthday, Lucas Hall's gift is already paying dividends for the first-grader.
While metal detecting with his father, Gary, on private property outside Berryville, Lucas had a feeling the two needed to stop and look.
His hunch paid off.
Buried six inches deep was a sword thought to have been used during the Civil War.
"We stopped on the four-wheelers and Lucas said 'right here,"' Gary recounted Monday. "So we started digging, and not a minute later, there it was."
"I was excited," Lucas said.
But the pair was still unsure of their finding until they started digging deeper.
"We originally thought it was an old fence post," Gary said. "I started pulling it out of the ground, and when I saw the handle I went 'Oh my gosh."'
Lucas's passion for metal detecting skyrocketed, his mother, Tina, said, after their neighbor gave him a few Civil War-era bullets he found while metal detecting on his property.
The family is still unsure what kind of care is needed to preserve their discovery, which has been sitting on a towel in their living room since it was found.
"That's the biggest thing right now, just touching it makes it disintegrate, and I want to preserve this for him," Gary said. "We haven't had it to an expert yet because we aren't sure who to take it to."
Gary Crawford, president of the Kernstown Battlefield Association, examined a picture of the sword Monday.
He believes it is a light cavalry sabre model 1840 or 1860, but said it's too difficult based on its condition to determine where the sabre was manufactured or which side used it.
The handle design, Crawford said, helps narrow down the time period of manufacturing.
"There is really no way of knowing [which side used it] because many of these sabres were manufactured in the North before the war and stocked in southern armories," he said. "When the war started, the South just took those weapons and passed them out to their troops."
Crawford said that about 18 inches of the blade may be missing.
"It may still be in the ground," Crawford said, "or it may have been broken and thrown away - that wouldn't have been uncommon."
Regardless of any monetary worth the sabre might possess, the family isn't interested in selling the relic, Gary said.

TIME GETTING SHORTER
The lake effect is over and it's getting closer to the end of the month. Still a lot of snow on the ground with snow in the forecast. One more hunt is not looking good. I will have to keep my eyes open and try to find an area where the snow doesn't look to deep. I've started my research for next year getting some history books of the area - we'll see where that leads. To those who can hunt - happy hunting and stay warm

BARBER QUARTER
History: These U S quarters were designed by Charles E. Barber. The Barber or Liberty Head type quarters were minted between 1892-1916. The "3 Keys" to the series are the 1896-S, 1901-S and 1913-S. The 1901-S is by far the most valuable having a value of $5,500 in Good-4. I will have to wait until next year to try and find my first.

ANOTHER WINTER STORM
Well another lake effect storm is supposed to bring another 1-2 feet of snow the next couple of days. When I went to work I noticed that my school had a lot of the ground showing from Sunday's warm and rainy day . Wish I had known - I would have done some hunting to find 3 more coins for 3000 for the year. Now with this storm who knows - hopefully by next week most of the snow will be gone again.

STILL HOPEFULL BUT .....
Well I still am hoping to get one more day of hunting before the end of the year to try and find 3 coins for 3000 total for the year. The temp is decent today but the snow is too deep to try and hunt . Rain in the forecast tomorrow so I hope it melts a lot of the snow. I will keep my fingers crossed.

THINK WINTER IS HERE
Well I think winter is officially here in Central NY with the lake effect snow finally ending today. Got close to 4 ft of snow in the last 3 days. I was hoping for one last hunt this year but not looking promising. A possible storm this coming Sunday will be worse than the last 3 days. My first full year and I think it was a good one so I can't complain. I guess it's time to do some research and get ready for the 2011 hunting season. Everybody stay warm and happy hunting.

AND THE SNOW KEEPS FALLING
Well it's the 3rd straight day of lake effect snow with maybe the end in sight. But there is a possible storm for Sunday into Monday bringing more snow. I don't know how deep the snow is but it doesn't look like I will be able to get out anytime soon. I was hoping for one more hunt this year to find 3 coins and top 3000 for the year. We will have to wait and see.

LET IT SNOW
Didn't get out at all yesterday thanks to the snow which has been non stop. It's still snowing and schools has been canceled or delayed. The snow is supposed to come down all week so it may be a while till I get out again.

SCHOOL HUNT - 2 WHEAT PENNIES
Went back to my second favorite school to try the detector with a new arm cup since I had it replaced yesterday.
Found 2 wheat pennies - 1951 and one unreadable about 8" down. I tried to get a date but no dice - it was just too corroded. Also found a buck 23 in clad - 3-q, 4-d and 8 pennies. With just a bit of snow on the ground I could see my tracks and was able to cover better ground. I still hope there is silver there and not a fluke finding the one mercury dime.

GAVE IT A SHOT
Went back to the park this morning for a couple of hours. It was windy and cold and the ground was slightly snow covered and muddy but got to get in what hunting I can. Only found 33 cents - 3-d, and 3 pennies - better than finding nothing. The days are limited now and it's supposed to be cold all next week - my goal of $300 is looking harder to reach.

RAIN THEN SNOW
The rain came down in buckets yesterday morning then the temperature dropped and the snow began. Didn't snow much - but still couldn't get out. Hopefully the wet weather is done and a hunt is in the future - it's just going to be cold.

WANTED TO GIVE IT A TRY
I was hoping to get out this morning before the rains came but the rain beat me to it. It was supposed to rain this afternoon but as always the weatherman was a few hours off as it is raining now and I will have to wait.

PARK HUNT
With winter right around the corner, I need to take advantage of the nice days left to get out and hunt. Went back to my park - the pickings are getting thin. Started very slow - the first hour no coins then I did manage to find 87 cents - 3,q, 1-d and 2 pennies. I was beginning to wonder if I was going to get skunked. Next year I'm going to have to travel as the places that I hit this year have been picked through fairly well. Tomorrow is supposed to be nice then the rain and cold come in so maybe one more day here then pick and choose the days. Still would like to hit my goal of $300.

TRIED TO GIVE IT A SHOT
Wanted to try a different place this morning and went to a high school down the road. Been to this school before but today it was very wet and cold. I didn't stay long as the ground was also very muddy. Only found a penny and dog tag. I will have to wait till around Tuesday and try a park or two - hopefully the ground will be a little drier and the temp a little warmer.

SLIM PICKINGS BUT FOUND A WHEAT
Gave the school another try yesterday - coins are getting slim but did manage to find a wheat penny - 1941. My take was 46 cents - 1-q, 1-d, 1-n and 6 pennies for 9 coins. Going to have to hit some different areas to try and get my goal.

THANKSGIVING MORNING HUNT
Went back to the school where I found my last merc - no silver or wheat today - I'm getting spoiled - but reality has to set in - can't find it all the time. My take today was a buck 71, 3-q, 8-d and 16 pennies - 27 coins. Also found another game token. If the weather holds out I may make an afternoon hunt - not too bad outside. Trying to reach my goal of $300 by the end of the year.

QUICK LUNCH HUNT
Got to do a quick lunch hunt today due to my schedule change. Nothing old, did find the usual clad. My take was 87 cents - 1-q, 5-d, 2-n and 2 pennies plus a canadian quarter - 11 total coins. Wasn't too bad hunting - wish it wasn't as windy.

Three-Year-Old Finds £2.5 Million Treasure with Metal Detector
A three-year old boy playing with his grandad’s metal detector struck gold when he found treasure worth an estimated £2.5million - a 500-year-old gold locket.
James Hyatt struck gold when he unearthed the 16th century artifact in a field on his very first outing using a metal detector.
Experts believe it is one of only four of its kind in Britain and could have belonged to royalty.
The 2.5cm pendant has a picture engraved on the front of the Virgin Mary clutching a cross and five bleeding hearts on the back.
Its sides carry the names of the three kings who visited Christ after his birth. It has been officially declared treasure and will be offered for sale to the British Museum and other institutions.
A similar artifact was bought for £2.5million by York museum.
The proceeds will be split between the unnamed landowner and James’s family.
This find was made with an Fisher F75. The Fisher F75 as well as many other top-of-the-line detectors are readily available at Kellyco. If you felt inspired by this story and would like start your own search for treasure, make sure to visit Kellyco to find the perfect detector to suit your needs.
I'm happy just to find silver. One of these days - I hope.

MORNING HUNT YIELDS 15th SILVER COIN
Went to the school close to home where I have found several wheat pennies. Today I found my first silver coin there - a 1934 mercury dime - my 6th this year. I also found a buck 26 in clad. A little warmer day to hunt but not by much. My take was 2-q, 5-d, 3-n and 11 pennies. I was digging memorial pennies deep and found the merc about 4" down.

QUICK HUNT AT A SCHOOL
Went to my son's school and did a quick hunt since he had some friends that wanted to play on the football field. Found 78 cents - 2-q, 2-d, 1-n and 3 pennies. Also found a crayola factory token - it was cold hunting with the wind a whipping.

SLOW DAY IN THE PARK
Went back to the park for just over an hour and I think that the coins are running thin. I only manage to find 55 cents 2 quarters and a nickel. The date of the nickel is 1948 - still some old coins left. There is still some areas I need to try and hunt more since I've been concentrating on the areas where I have found the silver and most of the wheat pennies. But at least I didn't get skunked.

Went back to the park - it started out well - found a 1944 wheat penny right off then nothing but clad. I still think there is silver there - just need to find it but I did find a wheat. My take today was a buck 46 - 4-q, 3-d, 2-n and 6 pennies - 15 coins.

BIRTHDAY SILVER
I turn the big 5-0 today and went for a quick hunt when the weather cleared up. Found myself a birthday gift - a silver rosie 1953-d dime. Along with the barber dime I found yesterday I can say it's been great a great birthday.
THE BIG 5 - 0 TODAY
I hit the half century mark - in age that is - the big 50. I'm off to a good start - I woke up this morning. I guess the barber dime was a good b-day present. Would like to get out today but I don't think the weather is going to let me. Not supposed to be a good week for hunting - coins.

HOMETOWN HUNT YIELDS A NEW FIRST
I'm going to have to go home more often. I went up north to visit my brother and attend the church bazaar. Went hunting with a friend who we were staying with this morning at the old high school now turned into a tot lot. Found some clad on a playing field - a 1946 wheat, then decided to hit a small area in front where the school used to be. I manage to find my first barber dime - 1904. My 13th silver coin this year. We hit a school on Saturday only finding clad. My clad haul for the weekend was 10-q, 8-d, and 12 pennies - 1 canandian quarter and 3 game tokens. 30 coins. My friend found over $2 in clad.

VERY SHORT SCHOOL HUNT
Only could get out about an hour so I hit a school down the road. Did find a wheat penny -1938- and some clad -
a buck 20. The take was 3-q, 4-d and 5 pennies - 12 coins. I still think there may be silver there - finding the wheat pennies at different areas on the grounds. Wanted to get out and try a park but the boy has a friend over and the wife is out.
